CHAPTER 13

Bri thought she would suffocate on the ride back home with all the words she had to say. So many words, mostly about DeeDee’s total lack of communication, the rash decision to make such an offer to Essence and Gia without conferring with her first and how bad of an idea it was to invest in either of those two at the moment.

To see them finally smiling at each other should’ve been sweet, but how a thing happens matters.

DeeDee was eerily quiet, no doubt scheming on how she could turn on the charm and disarm her.

“Can you get my purse out of the car?” Gia asked Essence as soon as they got in the house and gathered in the kitchen for water and refreshments. “It’s under my chair.”

Essence walked back into the blazing sun and fetched it for her, no back talk, no complaining, not even a twinge of attitude.

“Thank you very much,” Gia said when Essence gave it to her.

“You’re welcome,” Essence said, with a whole damn smile and five intense seconds of a dirty glance that made them seem like completely different people.

Bri looked at DeeDee who looked at her. Their loss on the court was their gain in business so she was a little annoyed at how well they could treat each other now that DeeDee had promised they’d be bankrolling their dreams.

“You want me to make you something to eat?” Gia asked Essence.

“Who me?”

“Yah you. Anything you want?”

Essence stood there, caught off guard. “It’s gotta be vegan?”

“I said anything.”

“It’s been a while since I’ve had your crab boil.”

“Crab boil?”

“You said anything.”

“Yeah, yeah, okay. Are you guys good with that for dinner?” Gia asked Bri.

“Oh don’t worry about us,” DeeDee said. “We’ve got reservations at Twisted Soul Cookhouse over in Midtown.”

“Oh, that’s cool. I’ve eaten there,” Gia said. “Trust. My crab boil will be better than anything on that menu.”

“She’s not lying,” Essence said, downing a bottle of water.

Bri didn’t doubt it, but she was hoping to be able to talk freely over dinner.

“Don’t want to be a bother,” DeeDee said.

Gia rolled her eyes. “Y’all know I got y’all.”

“Alright, alright,” DeeDee acquiesced to Bri’s entire disappointment.

“I need to go get some stuff. You want to roll with me, Bri?”

“Oh. Yeah. Sure.”

“I’m gonna freshen up. Give me 30 minutes.”

“Thank you,” Essence said to Gia, soft as a feather.

Gia batted her eyes. “You’re welcome.”

Bri rolled her eyes. She could only take so much.

“Ugh. Did you see those two,” Bri said, as soon as she and DeeDee entered the room and were free to speak. “Them googly eyes Essence was giving?”

“I saw,” DeeDee said. “Like she wanted to eat Gia whole.”

“I mean. She literally can.”

“Shit. She needs to.”

Bri slipped out of her shirt. “So should I be calling you Fairy god-Cupid?” she asked, sarcasm laced in her tone.

“What?” DeeDee chuckled.

“Since you’re responsible for single handedly fixing their marriage.”

“I didn’t fix anything.”

“I agree. And me and you…we need to talk.”

“I know,” DeeDee fizzled. She covered her face and peeked at her through two fingers.
